Description:
Loss of adhesion of the
paint film under eaves, porches or other protected areas where condensation
is likely to form. Water-soluble chemicals in previously applied paint films
contain salts which are pulled to the surface by moisture leaving a
crystalline powder.
Possible Cause:
Lack of inter-coat
adhesion can occur if:
- Paints are applied to old hard and glossy paint films.
- Salts which were formed during the life of the previous coat were not
removed before the new coat of paint was applied. These salts form an
invisible film, preventing a bond with a new topcoat. This leads to loss of
adhesion and peeling. Eaves are protected areas which do not receive rain.
Therefore, the natural cleaning effect of rain does not occur in these
areas.
Solution:
Sand or wire brush the
surface and wash all protected areas with a strong detergent solution and
water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry.
