Description:
The cracking of the paint
film over a caulked area resulting in a loss of adhesion or lack of coverage
of the caulk with paint.
Possible Cause:
• When paint is applied
over a partially dried bead of caulk, the paint dries first, forming a film.
As the caulk continues to dry, it shrinks causing the paint film to stretch
and crack.
• Conditions that adversely affect the drying time are air, surface or caulk
temperatures below 40°F; high humidity; and joints in excess of 1/2'' in
width or depth.
• Some caulks are not paintable. Before using caulk, make sure it says
paintable on the packaging.
Solution:
Allow the caulk to thoroughly
dry according to the manufacturer's label instructions before applying a
paint or coating.
