Description:
Failure of dried paint to
obscure or "hide" the underlying color or surface to which it is applied.
Possible Cause:
•
Overspreading-application of paint at a higher spread rate than recommended.
• Use of a paint with low hiding characteristics.
• Use of a paint that is much lighter in color than the previous coat.
• Use of a very dark color that contains low-hiding organic pigments (dark
colors frequently require multiple coats for good hiding).
• Use of low quality brushes or roller covers.
• Poor flow and leveling (See
POOR FLOW/LEVELING).
Solution:
If the substrate is
significantly darker or is a patterned wallpaper, it should be primed with a
primer tinted to the approximate color of the topcoat. Use a paint
formulated for better hiding and flow. Use quality tools and follow the
recommended roller nap (if rolling). Follow manufacturer's recommendation on
spread rate.
