Description:
When a paint surface is
repaired/repainted by touching up and the dried touch-up area appears
different in color, texture or gloss (sheen).
Possible Cause:
• A difference in
appearance between the original paint and a touch-up becomes noticeable when
a touch-up is applied at a different temperature than the original coat.
This problem is more prevalent with latex coatings and occurs when the main
body of the substrate is coated at one (usually higher) temperature and then
touched-up at another (usually lower) temperature. The touch-up spot will
not blend-in properly.
• Use of a different tool (brush or shorter nap roller cover for instance)
when touching up verses original applicator used.
Solution:
• It is impossible to know at
what temperature an initial coat was applied, but most coatings will apply
and touch up best at 70°
F.
• Additionally, make sure the application tool being used for the touch-up
is the same as that used for the initial coating. (If the first coat was
roller applied, use a roller for the touch-up).
• Finally, thinning the touch-up coating may help it blend in better.
